Mahonia nervosa

Small evergreen shrub with thick, spiny leaves. Bright yellow bunches of flowers in spring become dark blue-purple edible berries in summer. Grows wild here in our 80+ year old mature forest. Spreads via thick rhizomes; here in the nursery, it is constantly spreading from the forest edge into our walking paths and growing areas. Happiest in moist shade but can also handle some sun.
