FAQ
- We use only peat-free soil.
- Our locally sourced soil is a mix of forest humus, sandy loam, fir bark fines, dairy compost, pumice, and basalt, with the soil composition adjusted to the needs of each species (e.g. more pumice and basalt for rock-loving plants).
- Our soil is inoculated with hyperlocal mycorrhizae using rapidly renewable native soil: the needles, leaves, twigs, etc. that we sweep to the edges of our driveway decompose naturally into soil, intermingling with native mycorrhizae. We add a small amount of this soil into each wheelbarrow we mix. We never remove or disrupt soil from wild places.
- Our soil is plastic-free: we do not use plastic pellet fertilizers.
- Our plants are grown from local, hyperlocal, or regionally sourced seeds.
- Many of our seeds are collected here on the property.
- We never remove plants from the wild. We sometimes have “rescue” plants, removed from human-claimed spaces where they will be imminently destroyed if left in place (e.g. road or utility rights of way, driveways, etc.).
- When we source seeds from other native plant growers in the region, we aim for as local as possible. We never source seeds from sensitive, endangered, or otherwise protected plants or areas.
- If we source seeds from permitted wild places, we always obtain the proper permissions, permits, and information, follow all required protocols, and leave no trace.
